The Honest Checklist: Seven Things to Know Before a Private Baby Scan in 2026

Private baby scans can feel like a treat: a chance to see your baby, maybe find out the sex, and take home a photo for the fridge. They can also be a bit of a maze if you have never booked one before. Here are seven things nobody really tells you, plus what to expect so you can choose a clinic with your eyes open in 2026.
1. It is not a swap for your NHS scans
A private scan is an extra, not an alternative. Your NHS dating scan, anomaly scan and midwife appointments are still the backbone of your care. Private clinics can offer reassurance between appointments, but they are not there to replace screening, blood tests or medical follow-up. If a clinic suggests you can skip NHS appointments because you have booked privately, that is a warning sign. Keep your NHS team in the loop and attend everything you are offered.
2. Timing changes what you will actually see
Book too early and you may get an inconclusive scan. Book later and you may miss the window for certain checks. For an early reassurance scan, many clinics prefer around seven to eight weeks so a heartbeat is more likely to be visible. For gender scans, most wait until around sixteen weeks, and even then your baby’s position can affect the view. Ask the clinic what they can realistically show at your stage, rather than assuming every scan can answer every question.
3. Not all clinics are created equal
In 2026, private scan clinics are easy to find, but quality can vary. Look for a qualified sonographer, clear pricing, a proper complaints policy and recent reviews that sound genuine. Check whether the clinic is registered and inspected where required, and ask who will actually perform your scan. A friendly reception area is lovely, but it is not a substitute for good clinical practice. Trust your gut if a clinic is vague about its staff or promises too much.
4. Packages can be lovely, but compare the small print
Photo prints, video clips, heartbeat bears, gender reveal cannons and keyrings can all sound exciting. Before you pay, check what is included and what costs extra. Ask how many images you get, whether digital copies are included, and whether a written report is part of the package. Some clinics offer a basic scan with add-ons, while others bundle everything together. Compare a few clinics and choose the one that fits what you actually want, not just the flashiest website.
5. Preparation is simple, but check the details
Most private scan clinics will tell you whether you need a full bladder, whether to bring anything, and what to wear. Early scans may be transvaginal, which is worth knowing before you arrive. Later scans are usually abdominal. Ask whether you can bring your partner, a friend or children, because some clinics have limited room. Also ask about parking and travel time. A relaxed parent is easier to scan, so give yourself plenty of time rather than rushing in from the school run.
6. Gender reveal options come with limits
Finding out the sex can be a joyful moment, but it is not guaranteed. Your baby’s position, the gestation and the sonographer’s policy all matter. Some clinics will only reveal the sex from a certain stage, and some will ask you to confirm whether you want to know. If you are planning a reveal party, book with enough time to spare and have a backup plan. A scan is a medical appointment first and a celebration second, even when it feels like the other way around.
7. The emotions can surprise you
You might feel excited, tearful, anxious or all three in the space of five minutes. Seeing your baby on screen can be overwhelming, especially if you have been through fertility treatment or loss. It can also feel strange if the scan is quick and practical. Give yourself permission to feel however you feel. Ask questions if you need to, and ask for a moment if you need one. A good clinic will not rush you through the emotional side of the appointment.
A quick checklist before you book
Ask who performs the scan, what is included, what the clinic cannot see, and what happens if the scan is inconclusive. Check the refund policy, the report process and whether you can share the results with your midwife. Make sure you understand that a private scan is not a diagnostic guarantee. Then choose a clinic that treats you with kindness and honesty. The best private scan is not the cheapest or the flashiest. It is the one that gives you clear information, a calm experience and a realistic picture of what ultrasound can and cannot do.
