Beyond the Headline Price: Comparing Private Baby Scan Packages With Clear Eyes

Private baby scans are one of those purchases where the price tag matters, but it isn't the whole story. You might see a clinic advertising a scan from a very tempting figure, then discover that extra prints, a digital bundle or a weekend appointment changes the total. None of that means the clinic is being sneaky. It just means the headline price is a starting point, not a final quote.
If you're budgeting for a private scan in 2026, the aim isn't to find the cheapest advert on the page. It's to work out what you're actually getting, what you'll really pay, and whether the clinic's policies feel fair if plans change. That's a much calmer way to compare.
Why the headline price is only a starting point
Many UK clinics publish a from price for an early reassurance scan, then list later scans, gender scans and 3D or 4D packages at higher prices. Broadly, you'll see early scans advertised from around £60 to £120, gender scans from around £70 to £130, and some 3D or 4D packages from around £100 to £250. Prices vary a lot by location, appointment time and what's included, so treat those as rough signposts rather than rules.
The important question is what sits inside that price. Is it a ten-minute appointment or a longer slot? One printed photo or a full digital album? A report for your midwife or just a look at the screen? A partner in the room at no extra cost? Parking? A video clip? These details are where the real comparison begins.
What's usually included, and what's often extra
Most private scan appointments include sonographer time, a viewing session and some images. Beyond that, clinics differ. Some include a small number of prints, a digital download and a written report as standard. Others charge separately for printed photos, extra digital images, video clips, heartbeat bears or a 4D add-on.
Ask about appointment timing too. A weekday morning slot may cost less than a Saturday afternoon. If you need to bring children or a partner, check whether the room can accommodate them and whether there's a charge for extra guests. These are small details that can swing the total by a surprising amount.
Packages: bundle or bump?
Packages can be good value if you genuinely want everything in them. They can also tempt you into paying for extras you wouldn't have chosen on their own. Before you compare packages, write a short list of your must-haves. Perhaps it's a reassurance scan with a report, two prints and a digital copy. Perhaps it's a gender scan with a quick appointment and no prints at all.
Then price those items individually where the clinic allows it. If the bundle is cheaper than the sum of its parts, it may be worth it. If it only works out cheaper because it includes a 4D video you didn't want, it's not really a saving for you. That's not a reason to avoid packages. It's just a reason to read the contents list like a sensible adult rather than a sleepy parent-to-be.
Deposits, cancellations and the small print
Many clinics take a deposit or full payment at booking. Ask whether the deposit is refundable and under what circumstances. Check the cancellation window. If you cancel with less than 24 or 48 hours' notice, you may lose the deposit or pay a rescheduling fee. That's fairly common, but it should be clear before you pay.
Also ask what happens if you're late, if you need to bring the appointment forward, or if you change your mind about the type of scan. Good clinics explain this plainly. You shouldn't have to decode a paragraph of terms and conditions on your phone while your toddler climbs the waiting-room furniture.
Rescan promises: read the promise properly
A free rescan sounds reassuring, and it often is. But ask what qualifies. Many clinics offer a rescan if the baby is in an awkward position and the sonographer can't get the views you came for. That's genuinely useful. The policy may not cover a change of mind, a late arrival or a request for extra images.
Ask how many rescans are included, how soon they need to happen and whether there's any charge for a second appointment. If you're booking a gender scan, ask what happens if the sonographer can't confirm the sex on the day. If you're booking for keepsake images, ask what happens if the pictures aren't clear. A rescan promise is only as good as its conditions, so read them before you book rather than after.
Budgeting without pressure
Set a comfortable total before you start comparing. Include everything you're likely to want, not just the scan itself. Then compare clinics on total cost, appointment length, qualifications, reviews and the clarity of their policies. A slightly higher price can be better value if it includes a report, a longer appointment and a straightforward rescan policy. The cheapest option can still be good, but only if it covers what you actually need.
It's also fine to ask questions before booking. A clinic that answers openly about inclusions, deposits and rescans is usually a clinic that will be straightforward on the day. You're not being difficult. You're being a thoughtful customer.
Questions worth asking before you pay
What is the total price, including any extras I'm likely to choose? What exactly is included in the package? Is the deposit refundable? What's the cancellation and rescheduling policy? What happens if the baby won't cooperate? Are prints and digital files included, and how many? Is there a written report? Who will carry out the scan, and what are their qualifications?
At Peek-a-Boo Baby Scan, we know that peace of mind shouldn't come with a side order of pressure. Comparing real value rather than headline price is the quiet, sensible way to choose a private scan that feels right for your family and your budget.
